Author Interview with LoriAnn Weldon

Welcom LoriAnn Weldon to the blog today. She contributed the piece “Bones to Lay to Rest” to the Merciless Mermaids anthology.

LoriAnn is an academic librarian in the midwest who lives with a cat named Jedi, a roommate who probably isn’t a mad scientist, and more books than bookshelves.

Tell me something unique about yourself.

When I graduated from college I went and spent a year living in Frankfurt, Germany, as a caretaker for two young German kids.

What are your previous writing accomplishmernts and/or what are you working  on now?

I do have one other novella in print, a scifi racing story titled “Flyer,” but I’m currently working on an epic fantasy trilogy with a close friend that explores issues of abuse, freedom, fate, and what happens when you give a curious tinkerer access to magic-breaking tools.

(That sounds super cool!)

What inspired your piece in Merciless Maidens?

It was originally a ghost story, actually — an image of a girl in a white Victorian summer dress standing on a dune against a stormy sky was the story-seed, but it morphed a lot from that along the way.

Please share a short spoiler free snippet to whet our readers appetite.

Dr. McCormack had only been at the inn two days when he found the bones.
The sun had set and the moon was breaking over the horizon when he called us down to the beach with the eagerness of my little sister Elsie on Christmas morning.
He was young, for a doctor, and I had admired—blushing—the way his hair waved with the same gold as the sand below our inn. He’d been secretive about why he was here, in our little coastal hamlet, but I knew he was a naturalist of sorts—he had shown me his book of sketches: butterflies and shorebirds and the odd things one found in tide pools just after the sea had slipped away. Alice had known what he was looking for.

Such a wonderful and haunting piece. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Where can people find out more about you and your work.

I’m actually more active in the cover-design world than in writing, and can be found at @magpiedesignsltd on Instagram and on Facebook.

I took a peek and you’ve done some gorgeous covers!
