Author Interview with J.A. (Jim) Johnson

I’m happy to welcome Jim to my blog today. He wrote the short story Where the Nereids Play in the Merciless Mermaids: Tails from the Deep anthology.

So happy to have you here. Please tell me a bit about yourself.

I was born and raised in Michigan, but have lived South Carolina home for most of my life. I am married and have one child. My goal is for my writing to succeed enough that I am able to treat my day job as a side hustle.

Can you tell me about any of your other creative works?

I’m an author, illustrator and puppeteer. My books include, “The Beats of Oceanus” series, The “Nereus Project” series (with K.G. McAbee), “Legends of the Coast”, and the “Dragons West” series. I’ve created comics, coloring books, children’s books. I currently live in South Carolina with my wife and son.

What inspired your piece in Merciless Maidens?

I tried to think of what scares me most about the ocean, and that, for me, is the idea of being helpless and at the mercy of things I cannot see or control.

Please share a short spoiler free snippet to whet our readers appetite?

“To his right, a pale shape broke the surface only to slip from his sight as it curled back into the water. It was a fleeting glimpse; a graceful, elegant shape not unlike a woman’s back. But as the thing disappeared beneath the waves, the skin darkened, taking on the appearance of gray-green, iridescent scales.”
