Black, White & Read All Over

Black, White

BLACK
because
the colour of my skin

…although,
I always told my Mom I was
really  brown…

How often did I get judged
by how I looked?
How is that
fair
for anyone?

WHITE
they called me an
Oreo

black on the outside
white on the inside

although delicious,
the word stung

my heart shrank
at the thought

I was neither
so
I was
no one

READ ALL OVER
Between the pages
of my books
I found
solace

Tucked between sentences
was my refuge

And more

when I discovered
My Own Words
I found

Me

And I
was not as
ugly
as the world
would have me

believe.
